Equipments at home: Equipments in the office:
• ADSL modem

• Router with VPN path through function(MelcoBLR3-TX4L)

• Computer at home (windowsXP, 98SE) 		• ADSL modem (ACCA networks, ADSL router with modem set to bridge mode)

• VPN router (YamahaRT57i, ADSL, PPoE connection)

• Gigabyte switching hub.(Melco LSW-TX6GT2) +100M switching hub. 7 units

• "Radish File Server"(DELL PowerEdge600SC, 80GB, GigabitNIC, APC UPS: BK500)

• Clients(Windows98,XP etc) 20 units, printer 5 units
Characteristics of Radish VPN system

• Maintenance free file sharing collaboration in the office.

• Seamless file sharing access is possible using VPN connection from outside the office. No problem for file sharing with an ADSL connection speed of 4Mbps.

• Radish's UPS function makes the restoration process safe. Even for power failures occurring once in a few years.
"Radish" supports software mirroring for a safe operation.

• Radish and the VPN router uses ROM Linux, so virus infection is very rare. The system domain can not be overwritten, so a stable operation is possible.

• Radish and the VPN router has a configuration interface via Web for easy configuration. System installation to the HDD and driver installation are not required.

• Radish and VPN router configuration can be written on a piece of paper or even saved in a single floppy disk. So restoration during a system failure is speedy. Just buy a new server computer and router and reconfigure for restoration.

• With Radish and a VPN router, you won't need any special software other than a Windows OS for clients. Neither server license fees nor client license fees are needed.

• The Yamaha VPN router uses dynamic DNS so, a global static IP address is not required. A low cost, dynamic IP address contract with ISP is enough.

• Radish supports the latest Gigabit NIC so file sharing access performance has improved dramatically compared to the previous 100Mbps LAN.

Key points!

• Other than Yamaha, if you use other free dynamic DNS functions provided in the internet you will not need a global static IP address to connect to the company's LAN.

• If you use a VPN supported router at home, VPN communication is possible between the routers.

• If you will be using the VPN function of Windows, you will need to choose a router with a VPN path through function as mentioned in the case study.

What's a VPN?
• Short for Virtual Private Network.The VPN is the way to use Internet to provide remote office with secure access to the organization's network. The communication data will be encoded.

• The goal of VPN is to provide the same capabilities with a dedicated communication line, but at a much lower cost.

What about security?
• Since the data that goes through the internet will be encoded by the VPN routers, there is not much risk that the data will be hacked during communication. However, the company's server is made open through the internet, security configurations must be ensured to avoid risks.
Are the configurations difficult?
• The only parts that's difficult are the router and VPN settings. You can find practical configuration samples on the Internet for Yamaha, and other manufacturer's products. However, since there are still some difficulties to do the configuration for VPN, it is advisable to ask someone knowledgeable in this area, if you are not so sure.
